How to apply: your step-by-step guide

If you or a loved one needs to move into residential aged care, it can often be hard to know where to start. To help you with your decision making we suggest you contact our admissions team to arrange a tour of our facility and meet our Manager and clinical staff to discuss care needs and our services. We’ve broken the process down into four simple steps to help you on your way.

  1. Admission enquiries

Contact our Admissions Team on (07) 3807 0655 between 9am and 4pm Monday to Friday to arrange an appointment or to ask for any information. We will explain everything you need to know about applying and give you some information about our facility.

We’ll also break down the costs involved and go through the application process with you, so you feel supported every step of the way.

  2. Admission information pack

During your appointment, you will get an admissions pack that will include a range of information to help you with your decision. There will also be number of forms that you will need to complete.

  3. Assessment by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT)

The next step is to make contact with My Aged Care, either by visiting their website or calling them on 1800 200 422.

My Aged Care is run by the Australian Government and acts as your gateway to aged care services in Australia. In order to apply for residential aged care, you will need to contact My Aged Care and answer a few questions to work out what kind of care will best work for you.

My Aged Care will then organise for you to have a face-to-face meeting with an assessor, also known as an ACAT (Aged Care Assessment Team) assessment. The assessor, usually a nurse or other health care professional, will chat with you about your current situation and the kind of care you need.

After the assessment, you will receive a letter that states the services that you are eligible for, and the assessor can also determine whether or not you are eligible for a government-subsidised placement in an aged care home. This assessment consultation takes place with your Doctor and with subsequent approval by the Department of Health and Ageing. This assessment along with your pre admission meeting allows us to ascertain the best approach in relation to an individual’s care needs. This form is essential before any admission can take place.

  4. Return of all relevant forms

We know this process can be daunting, time consuming and often confusing, so if you need help with your application, or with any stage of this journey, we will always be there to help with any questions you have, or any assistance you need.

All forms are required to be completed and returned to our Admissions Officer prior to admission taking place. For more information please contact us (LINK TO CONTACT US PAGE).

We will lay out the next steps you need to take in order to move in, and we’ll be there to greet you and help you settle in when you do.

Fees and charges

The Australian Government subsidises many aged care services. But you will need to contribute towards the cost, plus that of accommodation and extra services, if you can afford to. You will not be denied the aged care you need because you can’t afford it. Government regulations stipulate what you will need to pay. There are four types of fees:

  • The basic daily fee: 85% of the single person age pension, presently $808.30 a fortnight. This applies even if you are a couple. Special concessions apply to some veterans.
  • A means tested care fee: an additional contribution you may need to pay, depending on your financial situation, income and assets.
  • An accommodation payment: for your accommodation in the home. This may be partly met by the Australian Government, again depending on your financial situation.
  • Fees for additional optional services: applicable if you choose a higher level of accommodation or additional aged care services.
  • Annual and lifetime caps: these limit the amount of means-tested aged care fees you will need to pay.

To find out more call My Aged Care at 1800 200 422 to estimate the fees and charges you will have to pay towards your residential aged care.
